The count follows how X weighs characters, emoji, and links. X can change its rules, so check its own counter if you land right at the limit. It all runs in your browser: your text is never uploaded.

How the X (Twitter) character counter weighs your post

X doesn't count every character the same way, and this counter follows its rules. Type or paste your post and the weighted count updates as you go:

  • Most characters count 1, including letters, accented letters like é and ñ, digits, spaces, and punctuation
  • Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters count 2
  • Emoji count 2, so 🎉 takes the room of two letters
  • Every link counts 23, whether it's a short domain or a long address

Characters left and links found

Next to the weighted count you see how many characters you have left and how many links the counter found. A post with 40 characters of text, one emoji, and one link weighs 65, however long the link is.

Links are the part people misjudge most. A 90-character link to an article still costs 23, so a long address doesn't eat into your post. A 12-character link costs 23 too, so a short link can take more room than it seems. Count each link as 23 and the total won't surprise you.

Switch between the 280 and 25,000 limits

Standard accounts can post up to 280 weighted characters. X Premium accounts can write long posts of up to 25,000. Use the limit toggle to switch between the two, and the characters left change with it. Keep it on 280 if you write each post of a thread by hand, since every post in a thread has its own limit.

Split into a thread when the post runs long

If your text goes past 280, the posts appear under “Split into a thread”. The counter cuts it into posts of up to 280 characters each. It breaks at the end of a sentence where it can, and between two words where it can't, so words stay whole. Each post gets its own Copy button, so you can paste them into X one by one as replies.

Turn on numbering to add “1/4”, “2/4”, and so on to each post. Readers see how long the thread is before they start, and you can check that every part made it in. Read the posts once before you publish: a cut between two sentences can still land in an odd spot.

Why other counters give a different number

A general character counter counts each emoji as 1 and a link by its real length, so with emoji or links its number won't match X. Use the character counter for bios, forms, and titles, and this one for posts on X. Both run in your browser, so your draft stays on your device. To trim a post that runs over, try these:

  • Keep one link per post, since each costs 23
  • Swap an emoji for a word only when it reads better, since each emoji costs 2
  • Cut filler like “I think” and “just”
  • Move extra detail into a reply and split the text into a thread

Frequently asked questions

How many characters is a link on X?

23, always. X counts every link as 23 characters whatever its real length, so a long article address and a short domain cost the same. The counter applies that rule and shows how many links it found in your post, so you can see where your characters went.

Do emoji count as 2 characters on X?

Yes. X weighs each emoji as 2, and the same goes for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters. Letters, accented letters, digits, spaces, and punctuation count 1. That's why a post full of emoji runs out of room sooner than the plain character count suggests.

How long can a post be with X Premium?

Premium accounts can write long posts of up to 25,000 weighted characters. Switch the limit toggle to 25,000 to check a long post, and switch back to 280 for a standard post or for each post of a thread you write by hand.

How does the thread splitter decide where to cut?

It fills each post with up to 280 characters and breaks at the end of a sentence where it can, or between two words where it can't, so words stay whole. Turn on numbering to add 1/4, 2/4, and so on, then copy each post with its own button.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The counting and the thread splitting run in your browser, so your draft stays on your device. You can paste an unpublished post or private notes, check the count, and close the page without the text leaving your computer or phone.
