Random sentence generator
Generate random English sentences for writing prompts, typing or dictation practice, and layout tests.
Each sentence is built by filling one of 20 templates with words written for this tool. “Medium sentences” adds an ending like “as the last light fades”.
Random sentences ready to copy
Open the page and five random sentences appear, each on its own card with a “Copy” button. The “Result” box holds all of them, one per line, so you can copy the whole batch or save it with “Download TXT”. Tap “Generate again” for a new set. A real batch from the English page looks like this:
- A sketch of a colorful mural lies on the table.
- What would you change about a new idea?
- If you find a hidden path, take a closer look.
- A musician discovers a distant mountain.
How the random sentence generator builds each line
Every sentence comes from one of 20 templates written for this tool: statements (“The journey starts with a hidden path.”), questions (“Who left a message beside an old bridge?”), and instructions (“Imagine a colorful mural in a different season.”). The gaps are filled from 10 subjects such as “the gardener”, 8 verbs, and 10 objects such as “a small island”. That adds up to 1,152 different short sentences.
Two templates have no gaps, such as “Between two trees, a lantern shines.”, so they always read the same. The words are combined without checking whether the scene makes sense, which is how you end up with a baker who studies a new idea. For a writing prompt, that odd pairing is often the most useful part, because it pushes the story somewhere you didn't plan.
Short or medium sentences, with or without repeats
“Mode” has two settings. “Short sentences” gives six to ten words. “Medium sentences” adds one of five endings and lands between 11 and 16 words, as in “Imagine an old bridge in a different season, while distant music fills the air.” “Amount” goes from 1 to 100 sentences per batch.
“No repeated sentences”, under “More options”, is on by default and keeps one batch free of duplicates. Turn it off and the same sentence can appear twice, which happens most with the two fixed templates. Repeats can also show up from one batch to the next, since each “Generate again” starts from scratch and doesn't remember what you saw before.
Grammar exercises with random sentences
Because every sentence follows a clear pattern, a batch of five makes a ready-made grammar worksheet. Generate it, copy it into a document, and ask students to work through it line by line. These exercises fit the English sentences without any editing, and you can generate a fresh set for every group so nobody copies a neighbor's answers:
- Subject and verb: in “A musician discovers a distant mountain.”, the subject is “a musician” and the verb is “discovers”
- Tense: “The writer remembers an old bridge.” becomes “The writer remembered an old bridge.”
- Negatives: “The journey starts with a hidden path.” becomes “The journey doesn't start with a hidden path.”
- Agreement: change “the artist” to “the artists” and fix the verb to match
Writing prompts, typing drills, and ESL practice
A random sentence gets you past the blank page and works for quick exercises in class or at home. The sentences are short and grammatical, with everyday vocabulary, so they're easy to read aloud, type from memory, or rewrite. A few ways people use them:
- Creative writing: use a sentence as the first line of a story and keep going
- Dictation: read three sentences aloud and check spelling and punctuation afterward
- Typing practice: type the batch without looking, then paste both versions into Text compare to see which lines differ
- ESL lessons: ask learners to continue a sentence with a reason that starts with because, then read it aloud
- Design and development: test cards, chat bubbles, or lists with readable sentences of mixed length instead of Lorem ipsum
Frequently asked questions
Are these sentences written by AI?
No. Your browser builds them from 20 templates and lists of subjects, verbs, and objects written for this tool, with no AI and no outside service involved. They aren't quotations either, so don't attribute them to anyone.
How many different sentences can it make?
Short sentences mode has 1,152 combinations in English, and Medium sentences multiplies that by five, to 5,760. Most of them come from the subject, verb, and object template, so in big batches you'll see that structure several times with different words.
Can I generate random sentences in Spanish?
Yes, on the Spanish version of this page, which has its own 20 templates and its own Spanish vocabulary. This page only generates English sentences. Switch versions from the Languages menu on the page.
Why does a sentence sound odd?
The words are combined at random, without checking whether the scene is logical. “The baker studies a new idea” is grammatical but unusual. That helps with creative prompts. For formal practice, pick the sentences that fit and generate again for more.
How do I copy a single sentence?
Tap “Copy” on its card to copy only that sentence. “Copy result” copies the whole batch, one per line, and “Download TXT” saves it as a text file.
