Random noun generator
Get random English nouns for Pictionary, drawing prompts, vocabulary practice, and naming ideas.
Nouns come from a built-in list of about 1,000 common, family-friendly English words. No noun repeats within a batch.
Random nouns, one card per word
Set “Amount” to any number from 1 to 50 and the random noun generator gives you that many English nouns. If you don't touch it, you get 10. Each noun sits on its own card with a “Copy” button, so you can grab one word and leave the rest. “Copy all” copies the whole batch, and “Download TXT” saves it as a text file. Tap “Generate again” whenever you want a new set.
Inside a batch, no noun shows up twice. Ask for 50 and you get 50 different words. Each new batch is drawn from the full list, so a noun from the last one can come back.
Filter nouns by first letter
Type a letter in “Starts with” and every noun in the batch begins with it. Choose B and you get words along the lines of bridge, button, or basket. That helps with alphabet games, with a round where every answer has to share one letter, and with a class that is working on one sound at a time. Leave the box empty to draw from the whole list again.
A bigger list of nouns, and only nouns
The list holds about 1,000 nouns, picked to be common and family-friendly, so they work at a party with kids or in a classroom. Typedly's random word generator mixes nouns, verbs, and adjectives from a shorter list. This page sticks to one word class, has far more nouns to draw from, and adds the letter filter, so a long game repeats less.
Each batch is picked with your browser's secure random numbers, so there's no pattern to the order. The pool itself stays the same every time you generate.
Games and lessons with random nouns
A noun is the easiest kind of word to draw, act out, or describe, which makes this list a good fit for party games and quick tasks in class. Generate a batch on your phone, read one word per turn, and pass it on:
- Pictionary: one noun per turn while the others guess
- Charades: act out the object without saying a word
- Drawing prompts: generate three nouns and fit all of them into one sketch
- Writing prompts: use five nouns in a short story
- ESL vocabulary: each student makes a sentence with the noun they get
- Mad Libs-style games: fill the noun blanks in a story, then read it aloud
- Naming brainstorms: put two nouns together for a team or project name, like river and lantern
- Improv: the noun becomes the object at the center of the scene
- Spelling warm-ups: read a noun aloud and ask someone to spell it before showing the card
Frequently asked questions
How many nouns are on the list?
About 1,000 common English nouns, chosen to be family-friendly. It isn't a full dictionary, so you won't find technical terms or rude words. The Spanish version of this page has its own list of Spanish nouns, written separately instead of translated from English.
Can the same noun come up twice?
Not in the same batch. Ask for 50 nouns and you get 50 different ones. Every “Generate again” draws a new batch from the full list, so a noun from the previous batch can show up again.
How is this different from the random word generator?
The random word generator mixes nouns, verbs, and adjectives from a shorter list. This page only gives nouns, draws from about 1,000 of them, and lets you filter by first letter, which helps in long games and alphabet rounds.
Can I get nouns that start with a certain letter?
Yes. Type the letter in “Starts with” and every noun in the batch begins with it. Clear the box when you want nouns from the whole list again. It works well for alphabet games and for practicing one sound.
Is the order really random?
Yes. The tool uses your browser's secure random numbers to pick each batch, so there's no pattern to guess. What stays fixed is the list itself: the same nouns are in the pool every time you generate.
