Random word generator
Get random English words for Pictionary, charades, writing prompts, and word games.
Words come from a built-in list of 315 English nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
Random words, ready when the page loads
Open the page and five random English words are already in the “Result” box, mixed from nouns, verbs, and adjectives. One run in “Nouns” mode gave envelope, cloud, unicorn, piano, and notebook. Tap “Generate again” for a fresh batch, or change “Mode” or “Amount” and the list updates as soon as you do. “Copy result” copies the whole list, and “Download TXT” saves it as a text file.
Pick nouns, verbs, or adjectives
The “Mode” menu has four choices. “All word types” draws from every list, while “Nouns”, “Verbs”, and “Adjectives” stick to one. The English list has 117 nouns (lighthouse, penguin, volcano), 101 verbs (juggle, whisper, bake), and 97 adjectives (fluffy, grumpy, zesty). They're everyday words, most of them easy to draw or act out, and none of them are rude or offensive.
Amount, repeats, and separators
“Amount” goes from 1 to 30 words. The generator shuffles the chosen list with your browser's cryptographic random number generator and takes words from the top, so one list never gives you the same word twice in a result. Two words, orange and open, sit on two lists each, so with “All word types” they can show up twice. Each new batch is a fresh shuffle, and words from the last batch can come back.
Under “More options”, the “Separator” menu sets how the words are joined in the result and in what you copy. Pick the one that fits where you're going to paste the list, whether that's a printout or a chat message:
- New line: one word per line, handy for printing and cutting cards
- Space: every word on one line
- Comma: envelope, cloud, unicorn, ready to paste into a chat
- None: the words run together, like pianotiger, which can spark a username idea
Games and classroom ideas with random words
A random word settles the “who picks?” argument, because nobody chose it and nobody can claim it was unfair. Generate a batch on your phone, read one word out, and pass the turn. These ideas work well with the English list, at a party or in class:
- Pictionary: “Nouns” mode, one word per turn
- Charades: “Verbs” mode, since swim, juggle, and climb act out without words
- Hangman: generate one word and let the others guess it letter by letter
- Writing prompts: ask for three words and write a short story that uses all of them
- ESL warm-ups: each student makes a sentence with the word they get
- Naming: pair an adjective with a noun for a team, a pet, or a character, like grumpy penguin
What the word list can't do
The words come from a fixed list of 315 entries, so it won't cover every word you know. You can't filter by first letter, length, syllables, or topic, and there are no proper nouns. The English page only gives English words; switch the page to Spanish under “Languages” for a separate Spanish list. For games that need words starting with a set letter, draw the letter first with the random letter generator.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the words come from?
From a list of 315 entries built into the tool: 117 nouns, 101 verbs, and 97 adjectives. It isn't a full dictionary, so you won't get technical terms, names, or rude words. The Spanish version of the page has its own list of 300 Spanish words.
Can the same word come up twice?
Not from the same list in a single result: ask for 30 nouns and you get 30 different nouns. Orange and open are on two lists each, so All word types can show them twice. Every Generate again reshuffles, so words from the previous batch can return.
How many random words can I generate at once?
From 1 to 30 per batch, set in the Amount box. For a long game, generate a few batches and copy each one, keeping in mind that some words can repeat from one batch to the next.
Are the words picked at random for real?
Yes, within the list. The order comes from your browser's cryptographic random number generator, the same kind of randomness used to create secure keys, so there's no pattern to guess. What stays the same is the list itself: the same 315 entries, every time.
Can I get words that start with a certain letter?
No. This tool doesn't filter by letter, length, or topic. For category games where every answer starts with the same letter, draw that letter with the random letter generator and come up with the words yourself.
