Discord text formatter and Markdown guide
Format Discord messages with Markdown: bold, italic, underline, spoilers, headings and lists. Preview and copy the result; use the dedicated ANSI tool for colored text.
Formatting can vary between Discord clients and message contexts. Check the result in the client where you plan to send it.

Colored text and ANSI codes
Open the dedicated colored text generator to apply eight foreground and background colors, bold and underline. Different parts of the message can have different styles. Copy includes the ansi fence and actual escape characters; you do not need to type the codes.
ANSI colors use the client’s palette rather than arbitrary RGB choices. The preview uses a palette reference updated in August 2026. Style codes count toward the message limit, so the full size is shown before copying.
How to format a message
- Type or paste your message. Select the words you want to format.
- Choose a style to insert Markdown around the selection. Without a selection, the button inserts markers at the cursor.
- Review the preview, copy the source and paste it into Discord. Click a spoiler to reveal it in the preview.

Discord text formatting cheat sheet
Discord text formatting runs on Markdown: you wrap words in symbols, and the style shows up when you send the message. Here are the markers this tool handles, grouped by what they do.
- Emphasis:
**bold**,*italic*(or_italic_) and***bold italic***. - Lines:
__underline__and~~strikethrough~~. - Spoilers:
||hidden text||. - Headings: start a line with
#to turn it into big, bold heading text. - Line starters:
>for a quote and-for a list item. - Code: wrap words in single backticks, like
this, or put three backticks (```) on their own lines above and below a code block.
How to combine styles
Stack markers to mix styles, and close them in the reverse order you opened them. __**text**__ works, while __**text__** gets tangled because the markers cross.
With the toolbar, select your words and tap two styles in a row. The tool keeps the words selected after each tap, so the second style lands inside the first.
***bold italic***__**underlined bold**__~~*crossed-out italic*~~||**bold spoiler**||# Heading with *italic*> **Bold** inside a quote
Show the symbols without formatting
Sometimes you want the symbols to show, not the style. Type a backslash \ right before each marker and it shows up as plain text.
For example, \*\*not bold\*\* shows the four asterisks instead of bold text. Check the preview: if you see the symbol and not the style, you got it.
\*for a plain asterisk\_for a plain underscore\~\~to show the tildes instead of strikethrough\|\|to show the bars instead of a spoiler\#at the start of a line so it doesn’t become a heading
Format Discord messages on your phone
The formatter works in your phone’s browser, so you can style a message without memorizing a single symbol.
- Type or paste your message in “Text to format”.
- Long-press a word and drag the handles to select what you want to style.
- Tap “Bold”, “Italic”, “Spoiler” or any other style in the toolbar.
- Tap “Copy”, open the Discord app and paste into the message box.
- If your browser blocks copying, the text stays selected, so use your phone’s own Copy option.
Frequently asked questions
Does the preview match every Discord client?
No. Discord rendering can vary by client and message context. Check the result in the client where you plan to post.
Can I combine styles?
Yes. Bold, italic, underline and strikethrough can be combined. Inside code blocks, formatting markers remain literal text.
Is my text sent to Discord?
No. Formatting and preview happen in this browser. Copy and send the message from your own account.
How do I hide a spoiler?
Select the text and choose Spoiler. It wraps the text in ||double bars||, and Discord hides it until someone clicks or taps it.
How do I add color to my message?
Markdown has no colors. Use the Discord colored text generator, which builds an ANSI code block with eight text and background colors.
