Random letter generator
Draw a random letter, or a batch of them, from A–Z, vowels, consonants, or your own alphabet.
The English page draws from A–Z, 26 letters. With “No repeated letters” on, the amount can't be larger than the letters available.
A random letter for category and word games
Category games start with someone calling a letter, and that person often gets accused of picking an easy one. Set “Amount” to 1, tap “Generate again”, and a random letter shows up on its own card. Nobody chose it, so nobody can argue. The same trick works for a hangman starter or for deciding who goes first by the initial of their name.
Letter modes: all, vowels, consonants, or custom
The “Mode” menu decides which letters go into the draw. On the English page, “All letters” uses the 26 letters from A to Z, and the other modes narrow that pool. Whatever the mode, each letter you draw gets its own card with a “Copy” button, so you can copy one letter without selecting it by hand:
- Vowels: A, E, I, O, and U (Y counts as a consonant here)
- Consonants: the other 21 letters
- Custom alphabet: only the letters you type in “Custom alphabet (custom mode)” under “More options”
No repeats, lowercase, and excluded letters
“More options” holds the finer controls. “No repeated letters” draws each letter once, like pulling tiles from a bag without putting them back, so the amount can't be larger than the pool: five vowels means five draws at most. Ask for six and you'll see “Reduce the amount or allow repeated letters.” “Letter case” switches the cards between uppercase and lowercase.
“Exclude letters” removes letters in any mode, and case doesn't matter. Type QXZ and the draw skips the hardest starters for a category game. “Separator” sets how the letters are joined when you copy everything at once with the main “Copy result” button or save them with “Download TXT”: new line, space, comma, or none.
How the random letter draw works
Every letter comes from your browser's cryptographic random number generator, with a sampling method that avoids bias, so each letter in the pool has the same chance on every draw. With repeats allowed, the same letter can come up twice in a row. Real dice do that too, and it doesn't mean the tool is stuck.
In a custom alphabet, type single letters. Spaces are ignored and duplicates count once, so AAAB draws A and B with equal odds instead of favoring A. Accented letters such as É or Ñ work. Digits, commas, and other symbols trigger “The alphabet must contain individual letters.”, and an empty field gives “The alphabet has no available letters.”
Frequently asked questions
How do I pick one random letter?
Set Amount to 1 and tap Generate again whenever you need a new letter. For a game with several rounds, add each letter that came up to Exclude letters under More options, and the next draw will skip it.
Can I generate random letters without repeats?
Yes. Turn on No repeated letters under More options and each letter appears once per result. The amount has to fit the pool: up to 26 with the full alphabet, 21 with consonants, and 5 with vowels.
Is Y a vowel or a consonant here?
A consonant. Vowels mode uses only A, E, I, O, and U. If your game treats Y as a vowel, switch Mode to Custom alphabet and type AEIOUY in the custom alphabet field under More options.
Is the letter draw fair?
Yes. The tool uses your browser's cryptographic random numbers and a sampling method without bias, so every letter in the pool has equal odds. Streaks, like the same letter twice in a row, are normal when repeats are allowed.
How many letters can I generate at once?
From 1 to 100 per batch. Each letter gets its own card with a Copy button, and the main Copy result button copies all of them with the separator you chose. Download TXT saves them as a text file.
