Discord colored text generator

Color parts of a Discord message with ANSI foregrounds, backgrounds, bold and underline. Preview themes and copy the complete code block.

Colored text for Discord (ANSI)

Select text and choose a color or style. With no selection, it applies to the whole message. This creates an ANSI code block, not ordinary colored Markdown.

The copied message contains real escape characters. Desktop and web clients support ANSI code blocks; mobile rendering can differ. Colors depend on the Discord theme. Test the message in the client where it will be read.

Make a colored Discord message

  1. Write a message. Select the words to color; without a selection, the style applies to the whole message.
  2. Choose one of eight foreground or background colors. Add bold or underline, then preview a Discord theme. Undo reverses the previous styling change.
  3. Copy the ANSI message and paste the complete block in Discord. The escape characters and opening/closing code fences are already included.

ANSI colors and client support

Discord ANSI uses a fixed palette, not arbitrary RGB or gradients. Foreground codes 30–37 and background codes 40–47 select colors; bold and underline use separate style codes. The preview approximates the theme palette and may differ from the receiving client. Desktop and web clients are the intended targets; mobile support can vary.

Message limits include the style codes

Choose the standard 2,000-character limit or the 4,000-character Nitro limit. The counter includes hidden ANSI escapes, line breaks and code fences. Copy is disabled when the selected limit is exceeded. Styling many small ranges uses more characters than applying one style to the whole message.

How to do colored text in Discord

Coloring a message takes four steps, and you never type a code yourself.

  • Type or paste your message, then highlight the words you want to stand out.
  • Pick a color under “Text color” or “Background color”. For extra punch, tap “Toggle bold” or “Toggle underline”.
  • Tap “Copy colored message”.
  • Paste the whole block into the message box of your Discord server, DM or group chat, then send it.

How Discord colored text works

The generator builds a code block tagged ansi. Inside it, invisible escape characters switch styles on and off as the text goes along.

Each styled stretch opens with a code like ESC[0;1;31;49m, where ESC stands for the invisible escape character. Read it left to right: 0 resets the previous style, 1 turns on bold, 31 picks red text and 49 means no background. A final ESC[0m clears everything before the closing fence.

Because the real escape characters travel with the copy, your Discord colored text arrives ready to send. Don’t trim anything when you paste: the opening ```ansi line and the closing fence are part of the message, and the colors depend on them.

Colored text on Discord mobile

Colors may not look the same in every Discord client. Desktop and web support ANSI code blocks, while rendering in the phone app can differ, and the reader’s theme changes the shades too.

So treat color as a bonus, not the whole message. If a word matters because it’s red, say it in words too, like starting the line with “Important:”, so it still reads if the colors don’t show.

Before you post in a big server, send a test and check it on both your computer and your phone.

Readable colors on dark and light themes

A color that pops on a dark theme can fade on a light one. Use “Preview theme” to check your message in Light and in at least one dark option (Ash, Dark or Onyx) before you copy it.

  • Black text almost disappears on Dark and Onyx.
  • In the preview, White is a light gray, so it looks faint on Light.
  • With a background color, pick a text color that contrasts with it and check the pair in the preview.
  • Bold gives colored words more weight, so they’re easier to read on any theme.
  • Color a few key words, not every line, so the message stays easy to scan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use rainbow colors or a custom hex color?

Discord message ANSI supports its fixed colors. Custom gradients need an image export or a different platform; arbitrary terminal true-color escapes are not a reliable Discord message format.

Why does the copied block look different on mobile?

Rendering depends on the Discord client and theme. A code block may keep its spacing while its colors or other styles vary. Check the destination client before relying on a particular appearance.

Can I combine this with italics or spoilers?

The ANSI code block owns the message format; normal Markdown markers inside it remain text. Use the Markdown formatter for italics, spoilers, headings and lists.

Is my message sent to a server?

No. Styling, preview and copying run in your browser.

How do I color only part of my message?

Select the words in the text box, then pick a color. With nothing selected, the color applies to the whole message.

Why can't I copy my message?

Copy turns off when the message, counting its hidden color codes, goes over the limit you picked: 2,000 standard or 4,000 with Nitro. Shorten the text or remove some styles.
