Random adjective generator
Get random English adjectives for writing prompts, character ideas, Mad Libs-style games, and vocabulary practice.
Adjectives come from a built-in list of about 600 common, family-friendly English words. No adjective repeats within a batch.
Random adjectives, one card per word
Choose an “Amount” from 1 to 50 and the random adjective generator lists that many English adjectives, 10 if you leave the default. Every adjective gets its own card with a “Copy” button. “Copy all” takes the whole batch at once, and “Download TXT” saves it as a text file. Tap “Generate again” for a fresh set.
No adjective appears twice in the same batch, so a list of 50 means 50 different words. Each new batch starts from the full list, which means a word you just saw can return.
Filter adjectives by first letter
Type a letter in “Starts with” and the whole batch begins with it. That's the quickest way to build alliterative names, the kind that stick: pick S for adjectives in the style of sleepy or sunny, then pair one with a noun that shares the letter. Teachers use the same trick for alphabet games and phonics practice. Clear the box to draw from every letter again.
About 600 adjectives, and only adjectives
The list holds about 600 common, family-friendly adjectives: colors, sizes, moods, textures, and the everyday words people use to describe things. Typedly's random word generator mixes nouns, verbs, and adjectives from a shorter list. This page gives you one word class, a bigger pool of adjectives, and the letter filter, so you can run a long describing game without seeing the same words over and over.
Your browser's secure random numbers decide each batch, so the order has no pattern. The list itself doesn't change between batches. Because the words are family-friendly, the list is fine to use with kids, whether you read it aloud or put it up on a classroom screen.
Ways to use random adjectives
Adjectives add the detail that turns a plain noun into a picture. A batch of ten is enough for a whole round of most of these, at home or in class:
- Character prompts: give a character three random adjectives and write a scene that shows all of them
- Drawing prompts: add an adjective to an object, like a grumpy cloud, and sketch it
- Mad Libs-style games: fill the adjective blanks in a story before you read it
- Naming brainstorms: pair an adjective with a noun from the random noun generator for a team, pet, or band name
- ESL practice: students say the opposite of each adjective, or use it to describe someone in the room
- Charades and improv: act out a trait like nervous or proud and let the others guess
- Pictionary twist: draw a noun the way the adjective describes it, like a tiny elephant
- Dictation: read the batch aloud and have learners write each adjective with the right spelling
Frequently asked questions
How many adjectives are on the list?
About 600 common English adjectives, chosen to be family-friendly. It isn't a full dictionary, so you won't find rare or rude words. The Spanish version of this page has its own list of Spanish adjectives, written separately instead of translated.
Can the same adjective come up twice?
Not in the same batch. Ask for 50 adjectives and all 50 are different. Each “Generate again” picks a new batch from the full list, so an adjective from the previous batch can come back.
How is this different from the random word generator?
The random word generator mixes nouns, verbs, and adjectives from a shorter list. This page gives only adjectives, draws from about 600 of them, and adds a first-letter filter, which is handy for alliterative names and long describing games.
Can I get adjectives that start with a certain letter?
Yes. Type the letter in “Starts with” and every adjective in the batch begins with it. It's the easiest way to build alliterative names. Clear the box when you want adjectives from the whole list again.
Is the order really random?
Yes. Each batch is picked with your browser's secure random numbers, so there's no pattern to guess. What doesn't change is the list: the same pool of adjectives is used every time you generate.
